September is the month of spreading awareness of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), so for the entire month of September, the topics will be geared towards PCOS every Wednesday because not many people know what it is and I was one of those people who didn’t know. I got diagnosed with PCOS back in December of 2019 and I have been sharing my journey way before I found out what I had. I have an entire Pinterest Board that has all the blog posts I have written about my PCOS Journey and you can find it here. I have written about my own symptoms, the bloodwork I had done (it was a lot of rounds), my experience with Doctors telling me birth control was my only option and how it was either that or just suffer with my syptoms. I have expressed my concerns about birth control to the Doctors and I stood my ground. I have also been to a naturopathic doctor only one time and I haven’t talked about that experience because it was an unusual experience. Plus, I ended up taking a different route. I talk about getting other tests done, getting acupuncture and adjustments done at the chiropractor (that has helped me physically and mentally), I also have seen another chiropractor who is also a dietitian and he helped me with the supplements that I needed to take, and I explain everything that I have tried, so I encourage you to read the blog posts that I have on the Pinterest board I have for my PCOS Journey.

Three weeks ago we talked about what Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) was, I talked to y’all about what I struggled with physically about having PCOS two weeks ago and last week I talked about how PCOS affected me mentally

Today is all about what changes I have made in the foods I eat. Ever since I got diagnosed with PCOS, I had to be more aware of what I ate because women with PCOS have a high risk for so many things like diabetes and heart disease… if they don’t take care of their bodies.

I used to eat fast food some of the time and a lot of sweets. I really didn’t have to worry too much about eating something because I didn’t have anything wrong with my body and I didn’t have to think about it before I ate something.

Let’s just say I eat a lot different compared to what all I used to eat!

I was told to stay away from artificial sugars, honey, chocolate, and high fructose corn syrup – basically anything with sugar. I am cautious of the amount of sugar I eat, but I don’t limit it entirely because that is way too difficult for me to do (I have a sweet tooth🤦🏼‍♀️).

I also stay away from cheese, milk, and fried foods because they are all bad when it comes to hormones, especially since cheese and milk have added hormones in them.

Here is what I changed:

I drink almond milk in replace of regular milk.

I use Stevia instead sugar because it’s a natural sweetener from a plant.

I love making grilled chicken (I get the ones that don’t have any hormones) and I put it on some spinach.

I have started to eat grilled shrimp and I have always had shrimp fried when I would eat it.

I boil some eggs and put that on spinach with some salmon (I get it already cooked in a pouch).

I love eating quinoa, red lentils, black beans, and chickpeas!

I also eat oatmeal every single day for breakfast – I pour some oats in a bowl, sprinkle some ground flaxseeds on top, add some cinnamon and peanut butter, add some water, and put it in the microwave for a minute and thirty seconds. That’s how I make my oatmeal every day and I also put bananas on top! Then, I sometimes cook peaches with the oats, or apples and it’s so good!

I also eat grapes, apples, peaches, and strawberries.

I also love cutting up sweet potatoes and roasting them.

You can probably tell that I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables!

Some people may think I’m crazy or wonder why I always eat so healthy and how they could never eat healthy like that.

I do it because I do not want to be taking several medications when I’m old and I want to be eating healthy right now rather than some Doctor telling me that I need to eat healthy in thirty years.

I honestly like eating healthy because it makes my body feel good compared to when I eat unhealthy.

I even meal prep every Sunday because if I don’t, then I honestly will just eat anything or barely eat at all. Meal prepping helps me a lot, especially since I’m in college and started student teaching!

There are so many environmental factors that have a negative impact on hormones and it’s impossible to eliminate everything – cleaning products, chemicals in makeup, plastic, heating up plastic in the microwave, nail polish, perfumes, and just so many other things that we don’t realize. It’s so crazy!

Anyways, that is everything I changed and what I normally eat!

There is always a reason behind why people eat and not eat certain things that we don’t know about.
